Some Days You Just Need a Good Cry
74
Sometimes life sucks. It sucks hard. You know what might make you feel better? Watching a movie where other peoples' lives suck, possibly even worse than yours. For those days where you just need to let it all out, here's a list of movies.
Materials Needed:
- Tissues (Lots)
- Tub of ice-cream
- Snuggly blanket
- One of the movies on this list
- Possibly a cat or something...small dog? You're going to need something to hug!
Titanic
Okay, you knew this one was going to be on the list, and how could it not? The 1997 movie has been making us cry since day one, despite the fact that we all knew what was going to happen! The tragically famous story is about (just in case you have been in outer-space or something for the past fourteen years) Jack (Leonardo DiCaprio), a poor drifter and first-class socialite,Rose (Kate Winslet), who cast away the chains of society's expectations and fall in love after a chance meeting aboard the RMS Titanic. While the movie might make you smile a little bit, don't worry, that only adds to the cascade of tears that you will cry.
Cryability Rating: "Please put on a life-vest. You're going to need it"
A.I. Artificial Intelligence
This is the story about a boy who is fighting for his adoptive mother's love. The boy is a robot, the first of his kind. He is capable of feeling deep emotions, forming bonds, feeling love, happiness, rejection, despair, jealousy, and loneliness. If that doesn't sound like the perfect recipe for a tear-jerker I don't know what is. The robot-boy, David (Haley Joel Osment), travels across his world, with the help of another robot, or mecha as they are called in the film, Gigolo Joe (Jude Law). David, remembering the stories that his mother used to tell him, searches for the Blue Fairy from Pinocchio, so that she can make him into a real boy who could be loved in a society that views him as nothing more than an appliance.
Cryability Rating: Tears cried by this movie's viewers are what really caused the ocean to rise
Steel Magnolias
This is a classic, and with as many stars that are in it, you can bet it will be good. You will laugh. Then you will cry. Cry like only Sally Field and Julia Roberts can make you cry. The story is about a gaggle of Louisiana women, centering around M'Lynn (Sally Field) and her daughter, Shelby (Julia Roberts) who is diabetic. And getting married. And worried that she won't be able to have children due to her condition. At its core, this is a story about a mother's love for her daughter. If it weren't for the town grouch, Ouiser (Shirley MacLaine) it would probably be impossible to watch this movie and smile ever again. It's that sad.
Cryability Rating: 10/10 Dolly Parton Wigs
I Am Sam
This 2001 movie is about Sam (Sean Penn), a father with a developmental disability, and his fight to maintain custody of his daughter, Lucy (Dakota Fanning) after she is taken away and put into foster care. With the help of a steely lawyer, Rita Harrison (Michelle Pfeiffer), Sam wrestles with the legal system to prove that he is a good father and that he is capable of caring for Lucy, who despite being picked on by other kids because of him, wants to stay with her father. Aside from the obvious moral dilemma that the story brings up, the journey that Sam and Rita take during the trial is full of emotion, revelation, and self-reflection. On a side-note, can you imagine a tragedy movie with both Dakota Fanning and Haley Joel Osment? I think it would suck all happiness right out of the world.
Cryability Rating: Family-pack of tissue boxes
RENT
If you're in the musical mood, RENT is your best bet. The story about a group of self-described bohemians living in the East Village of New York City, RENT examines such subjects as sexuality, HIV/AIDS, poverty, drug abuse, and relationships. The cast is colorful, from the guitar-toting Roger (Adam Pascal) to drag queen Angel (Wilson Jermaine Heredia) to drug addict Mimi (Rosario Dawson). The heartbreaking relationships between the bohemians and the ever-present struggle against poverty and homelessness set the stage for the story that has become famous on Broadway. Side-effects of watching this film include: Crying every time you hear "Seasons of Love", singing into hairbrushes, and the unquenchable desire for life to be like a musical.
Cryability Rating: Five hundred twenty-five thousand six hundred tears

P.S. I just watched the trailers. I Am Sam looks like a REAL tear-jerker. Don't know how I missed that one. And Billy Zane played the perfect selfish, aristocratic snob.
Hey nikki, nice list may i suggest Legends of the fall and 50 first dates (watched it yesterday for like the 100th time and cried like a baby). Looking forward to more of your hubs!
hi nikki! I love this hub! It's awesome!!! My favorite tear jerker is Terms Of Endearment and most every Julia Roberts and Sandra Bullock movie!!! Hahaha! I actually prefer to laugh more then cry because it burns more calories and I don't have to redo my eyeliner!!! Hahaha! Sorry I'm turning your crying hub into a laughing hub! See what I mean about laughing...it's just as beneficial! Excellent hub!!! Very creative and sad :(
Nice Job. I agree, a good movie or even a sad song does help one have a good cry, which is very good for the soul on some days.

Oh my goodnees! Your list of tear-jerkers contains 3 of my all time favorites - Titanic, Artificial Intelligence and Rent.
If there was ever a movie about the meaning of unconditional love, Titanic is it. Haley Joel Osment's performance in AI was one of his best - I don't think he got enough recognition for how well he acted in that movie. And Rent? Oh my goodness, again! I was humming Seasons of Love for weeks after I saw it. And I recognized several actors that I've seen on TV shows like Jesse L. Martin and Tracie Toms (fabulous voice!). And who could forget the fine Taye Diggs!
Braveheart and Schindler's List had me grabbing for tissues, too. I'll have to check out some of the other movies on your list. A great review of some great movies. Rated up and awesome!
